Merzouga dunes, nomad life and a return via Meknes & Volubilis
A 3-day round trip from Fes to the majestic Sahara and the deep-rooted lifestyle of its nomads. The landscapes keep changing: cedar forests, the Atlas Mountains, canyons, palm valleys and sand dunes. The last day includes Meknes and the Roman ruins of Volubilis before you are back in Fes.
Your private driver picks you up in Fes at around 07:30 and heads south across the fertile plain. Short stop in Ifrane, the "Switzerland of Morocco", then through the UNESCO-listed cedar forest of the Middle Atlas where Barbary macaques roam. After lunch near Midelt, cross the High Atlas and the palm-filled Ziz Valley to reach the Sahara in the late afternoon.
Discover the desert area around Merzouga in the morning, then drive back north across the Atlas Mountains to Midelt, where you spend the night in an authentic riad.
Cross the Middle Atlas to Meknes, the imperial city of Sultan Moulay Ismail, and visit the Roman ruins of Volubilis before the drop-off at your hotel in Fes.
